7:1 Ippon throw (Nage Waza)

  1. Ippon resulting from a throw can only be awarded if the application of the technique is executed decisively, with elements of speed control, and placing opponent onto their back.
  2. Note: If an opponent is thrown with the above elements but manages to form a bridge or arch their back with only their heels and their head in contact with the mat, the referee may still award Ippon or an appropriate score.
  3. Ippon will be called in Nage Waza where the throw will result from a standing position.
  4. No Ippon score will be scored when a throw is executed from groundwork.

7:2 Ippon from Shime Waza or Kansetsu Waza (Strangles and Armlocks)

  1. When the contestant clearly indicates submission by tapping their opponents body or mat twice or more by either hand or foot, or may call submission vocally (Maitta) Ippon will be awarded.
  2. It is important that the Referees position themselves in the appropriate position as to witness any submission which may be evident.
  3. In the event that the referee feels that safety must take precedence, to the pride of the disadvantaged contestant’s stubbornness’ to submit, the referee will call Ippon before a submission is given or injury may occur.
