Throws & Counter Throws

The Kaeshi No Kata consists of ten attacking throws by Tori and ten counter throws by Uke. The Kata is designed to help develop and understand the fundamentals of attack and defence, which relates to an actual contest situation. The ten techniques of counter encourage Uke to anticipate and respond instinctively.

The Kata should start with Uke and Tori standing facing each other at approximately three metres apart with Kamiza to Tori’s right. Uke and Tori bow to the Kamiza and then to each other.

  • Uke and Tori take a step forward starting with the left foot first and then stand in the natural posture (Shizen Hontai).
  • Tori walks naturally to Uke, starting with the left foot, and will stop two feet in front of Uke.
  • Tori and Uke both take a small step forward with the right foot.
  • Tori then steps backwards leading Uke with his/her left foot throwing Uke with the first intended throw in a very slow manner.
  • The same throw is then repeated at a normal pace, whereupon Uke will counter throw with the intended counter.
  • The first five techniques are performed while both Tori and Uke are moving. The attacking throw and counter will occur in the last third step of both Tori and Uke’s actions.
  • The second set of five throws are performed while stationary.
