Forms of Self Defence

The Kime No Kata is a self-defence form which is based on attack and defence. The Kime No Kata represents tradition and formality in the days of the Samurai and the techniques relate to actual Samurai Combat situations, focusing on striking vital spots of the body. There are twenty techniques in total and these are divided into two groups – Idori (techniques that are executed in a kneeling position) and Tachiai (techniques that are executed in a standing position).

1. Idori (Kneeling)

  • Ryote Dori – Two hand hold
  • Tsukkake – Stomach punch
  • Suri Age – Forehead thrust
  • Yoko Uchi – Side blow
  • Ushiro Dori – Rear hold
  • Tsukkomi – Dagger stomach thrust
  • Kirikomi – Downward cut
  • Yoko Tsuki – Dagger thrust to side

2. Tachiai (Standing)

  • Ryote Dori – Two hand hold
  • Sode Tori – Side sleeve grab
  • Tsukkake – Face punch
  • Tsukiage – Uppercut
  • Suri Age – Forehead thrust
  • Yoko Uchi – Side blow
  • Keage – Kick to the groin
  • Ushiro Dori – Hold from behind
  • Tsukkomi – Dagger stomach thrust
  • Kirikomi – Downward cut with dagger
  • Nuke Kake – Sword drawing
  • Kioroshi – Downward cut with sword
