A fantastic day for the JFAUK at the 2023 World Sports Games!

After a long day of fighting, our judoka managed to secure multiple medals across their respective weight categories. Full results below:

A truly fantastic set of results at a very tough competition, full of high level judoka. At this level, it would be very easy to come away from these events unplaced, so we are very proud of our team managing to secure placings in every category 👏🏻👏🏻

Also a big thank you to our president Sampson Sampson for taking the time to bring our judoka to this event and give them the opportunity to compete at this level 🙇

Also travelling with the team was Sam Sampson, who was representing Cyprus and also managed to secure a bronze medal at -81kg 🥉

Beyond the medals, JFAUK is continuing to expands its reach, build bridges and provide opportunities to judoka.

Congratulations to all who recently attended the JFAUK Sussex Judo Day Camp, hosted by @clubjudoka

Led by high grades. Sampson Sampson (9th Dan), Seyed Razavi (8th Dan), and Rob Elliot (6th Dan), the day camp was a fantastic experience of learning and camaraderie. The morning session kicked off with a focus on tachi-waza as the judoka dove into the world of counters for uchi mata, and a variety of leg grab techniques. The tatami buzzed with energy as participants honed their skills under the guidance of the instructors. After a brief intermission, the judoka regrouped for an afternoon session dedicated to ne-waza. The spotlight shifted to top positioning, control, and smooth transitions from do-osae.

What truly made this day special was the exchange of knowledge and experiences among judoka from various regions. The event's diverse attendance drew participants from London, Sussex, Essex, Devon, and Scarborough. The shared passion for judo created an environment where everyone could learn from each other's unique perspectives, reinforcing the sense of unity that defines the judo community. As the sun began to set on this dynamic day of judo, participants were in for a delightful surprise—the event culminated in a refreshing dip in the sea.

The event was an immersion in the spirit of judo. The wealth of knowledge gained, the bonds formed with fellow judoka, and the memorable dip in the sea created a lasting impression that will undoubtedly linger in the minds of all who were present. JFAUK President Sampson is currently out in Gibraltar running a seminar and meeting with the Gibraltar Judo Federation to establish connections and work towards future training camps and competitions here.

Also, a congratulations to Peter Conroy who was awarded his 6th Dan by Sampson on behalf of the WJF after being recommended by the Gibraltar Judo Federation due to his ongoing contribution to the development of judo. Peter has worked tirelessly over the past year to grow and foster a positive judo community in the country. A fantastic achievement.

The next JFAUK Coaching Level 1 Course and Revalidation will take place on Sunday 2nd July, 10:30am - 1:30pm, Milton Keynes, Long Meadow School, MK5 7XX

This course is essential for any JFAUK judoka looking to progress to 1st dan as well as any students who are interested in stepping up into a coaching position.

Tough day for the team at the Copenhagen Open. Sam and Alexis were unlucky in the -73kg, coming away unplaced after two tough matches each in a category of 38 judoka. Sam Sampson went 1 win 2 losses, but remained unplaced at -81kg in a category of 26 judoka. Lucian Buleandra, also competing at -81kg also went unplaced after two hard matches. Mahdi went 2 wins and 2 losses to place 7th in a category of 14 judoka. Ross Elliot and Justine unfortunately had to withdraw last minute and remain in England. A tough day for the entire team, however, experienced has been gained. Well done for putting yourselves out.

A massive congratulations to JFAUK President, Sampson Sampson who today was officially awarded his 9th Dan by the World Judo Federation.

Sampson has been a student of judo for 50 years this year. Throughout his half-century in judo, he has continually and tirelessly dedicated himself to helping countless students learn and understand and develop our beautiful martial art. This grade is recognition for his dedication and contribution to the gentle way. Below is the full statement from Jaime Casanova, President of the World Judo Federation.

We are pleased to announce that WJF Technical Director, Sampson Sampson has been promoted to 9th Dan following a review of his service to our federation, and most importantly, to the world of judo as a whole.

Since joining the World Judo Federation in 2011, Sampson has proven to be an invaluable asset to our federation. Alongside many other high grades, he has helped to establish the traditional judo competition rules which have become a staple in our organisation and one of the many reasons that federations from around the globe feel compelled to join us. Sampson has also inspired countries such as Greece, Bulgaria, Gibraltar, South Africa and more to join the World Judo Federation through both his online presence as well as the events that he regularly runs in Europe underneath the WJF banner. Further to this, Sampson has also established a coaching curriculum that has been adopted by many countries, with the aim of assisting coaches, clubs and member federations to foster the development of judo in a constructive and effective way. Congratulations to all of the judoka who took part in the first Judo For All UK Junior competition since the pandemic.

This friendly event was held to introduce novice judoka to the environment of competition and compete against judoka from outside their dojo. The event itself saw Judoka attend from across London as well as from Kent and the South Coast!

Thank you to all travelled to the event and helped to make it a success.

Good luck to team JFAUK who are headed out to Thessaloniki for their first international event since the pandemic.

Representing JFAUK will be Andreas Kouyialis, Fahd Dalah, Lucian Buleandra, Mahdi Boettgenbach, Karl Summerbell and Ross Elliot.

In addition to the competition, the team will also attend a training camp.

The team will be supported by Sampson Sampson as well as Geert Engles who is making his debut as an international referee for the WJF.

We’re pleased to announce first junior tournament since the pandemic! This will be a fantastic way for juniors to either get back into the competition spirit, or, experience a friendly tournament for the very first time!

Friendly competition is a great way to put a students learnings into practice and try their techniques for real! It’s also a fantastic opportunity to feel the variety of emotions that come with competition and come out the other side a more experienced judoka both physically and mentally!

JFAUK President Sampson Sampson (8th Dan) recently travelled back to Thessaloniki after a long break to reunite with our affiliates JFAGR to train and plan a future programme of competition and travel for our judoka.

During the visit, Sampson was surprised with the presentation of a plaque from members of the local government authority in Thessaloniki, thanking him for his support and work in the city. For those that do not know, alongside helping to grow judo in Thessaloniki alongside JFAGR President Avgerinos Maistrellis, the two have also been instrumental been working with a charity for ex-prisoners and adults with troubled pasts. The charity, which uses judo as a tool to help reinstate disadvantaged adults back into society, has seen tremendous success amongst participants and now that travel bans have been lifted, Sampson and our other JFAUK officers can now continue to return to Thessaloniki to assist with this work.

Great work by JFAUK Officer Dave Hammon who recently ran a seminar ‘Judo Real Time Application’ focusing on Judo for self defense and restraint at Ely Dojo. A few words from the club:

It was a brilliant day of judo. Without any judo suits ! With black belts and experienced coaches along from Judo, BJJ, Karate and Tae Kwon Do - it was a great day of learning for everyone involved. 🥋🥋🥋🥋
